My dogs are an important part of the family. So important, in fact, that I have portraits of them hanging on my walls. Dogs are so cute, do so many funny things, and make adorable faces. We’re always trying to capture their personalities in our cameras, but sometimes it’s harder than it looks. Here are a few tips to get great pictures of your dog.

  1. If you’re photographing outside, be sure your dog is safe. Keep him on his leash if you’re not in an enclosed area. No picture is worth endangering your pet.
  2. Relax and have fun! If you get stressed, so will your dog, and you’ll never get the shot you want. If that happens, end the session right away and try again another day.
  3. Lighting – even lighting will make your dog’s face look it’s best. To avoid bright, splotchy patches on your dog’s fur, try photographing on a slightly overcast day when the light is soft, or either early or late in the day.
  4. Get down at your dog’s level. You’re usually looking at her from above; see what it’s like to be closer to the ground.
  5. If you’re trying to capture your dog in motion, use a fast shutter speed. You might want to set your camera to “sports” mode. Dog’s move amazingly fast.

Bring plenty of treats and toys, be prepared to make strange noises to get your dog’s attention, and have fun photographing your pet!
