You gotta love National Candy Day. A little something sweet always hits the spot. Candy is one way we show that we love someone.
I have to admit, I’m somewhat of a candy snob. If it’s not chocolate, preferably dark chocolate, I’m not interested.
Candy brings back memories for me. For several years, when I was in elementary school, my mother made homemade chocolate covered peanut butter eggs and opera fudge for Easter. We lived near Hershey, PA, so we’d all pile in the car and go to the chocolate factory to pick up a giant, I mean giant, bar of chocolate. As we drove into town, we could smell the cocoa beans roasting and see the chocolate smoke wafting out of the factory smokestacks.
But the one memory that always comes to me when I think of candy isn’t even my memory, but one that’s been told to me many times. When I was a toddler, my dad and I used to make fudge together. (My dad never cooked, but this was one treat he was ready to get his hands dirty for.) I would stand on a stool and stir the mixture of melted chocolate, butter, and marshmallow creme. And I’m sure we both sampled the fudge before it was cooled.
I love to hear these kind of stories from my clients. I want to know how they show love to one another, what they love to do together, because that helps me create a meaningful portrait for them. Making candy together, going on an adventure to procure the perfect ingredient, creating a family portrait. All these things say “I love you – You are special to me!”
