Did you know that a 9 year old, Russell Capper, asked President Nixon for a day to celebrate grandparents back in 1969? Russell got a letter back from the Personal Secretary to the President, but it said that the president could only do that when a congressional resolution authorized him to do so.

The founder of Grandparents’ Day is considered to be Marian McQuade. She urged youth to “adopt” a grandparent to learn more about the older generation and all they’ve contributed.

The National Grandparents’ Day proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 after a resolution was introduced by Senator Randolph and passed by congress.

National Grandparents’ Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day.

What are some ways to celebrate Grandparents’ Day? Most importantly, spend time with your grandparents, either in person or on the phone or zoom.

Maybe go on a hike or picnic together, do something together your grandparent enjoys, build a puzzle, play a game, bake cookies. Listen to their stories.

Don’t forget to have your portrait made with your grandparents. The portrait is a reminder of how much love there is in your family. I love the portrait I have on my wall of my parents with all the grandkids.

I’d love if you’d comment on your how you spend Grandparents’ Day.
