In this uncertain, frightening time, life goes on. The forsythia in my neighborhood is blooming, the kids are growing and changing every day, and new babies are being born.

The Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International recommends that all newborn and maternity photographers cease sessions. No one wants to put new babies at risk! But you still want to capture those early days. The first 2 weeks of a baby’s life is a wonderful time to photograph them, and I found with my kids, they change – a lot – after the first 2 weeks.

Here are some tips to get the best newborn photographs when you can’t hire a professional photographer:

  1. You probably have a ton of adorable outfits for your newborn – this isn’t the best time to photograph them in the outfits. Usually, they ride up and cover baby’s face. Find your favorite blanket, and swaddle your baby. It will keep baby comfy and make for beautiful portraits.
  2. Turn up the heat in your home, and make sure baby has a full belly. This will help keep baby happy, comfortable, and sleeping.
  3. Position baby facing light coming in from a window, preferably a window that isn’t getting strong direct light.
  4. Lay baby on his back on a soft blanket on the floor and take a picture from above. Be sure your camera is secured around your neck.
  5. Lay baby on her side on a bed with someone nearby to be sure she doesn’t roll off.
  6. Don’t forget to take pictures of mom with baby and dad with baby. Baby can be naked or swaddled. Be sure to turn baby’s face toward the camera. Have mom or dad lean their head toward baby or give baby a little kiss.
