What To Wear For Business Headshot Portrait

“What should I wear?” is the question I get asked the most often.

business portrait, business headshot, personal branding, Bucks County business portrait photographerIt’s a good idea to bring more than one outfit to your photo session so you have different looks to post for different occasions and different purposes.

Be sure your clothing reflects your profession and your brand. A suit might not be appropriate for every business or every site you post on.

Here are some general guidelines:

  1. Proper Fit
Make sure whatever clothing you choose fits well. Too tight and you will see wrinkling and gaping. Too loose and you will look heavier than you are.

  2. Your Face Is Most Important
You don’t want to wear anything that draws attention away from your face. So avoid bold patterns, logos (unless it is your business logo), bright colors. Dark colors are often best, but take your brand and image into consideration.
Long sleeves are generally a good idea so that your arms are not competing with your face for attention.
Avoid clothing that bunches up around your face.
  3. Jewelry
Wear what reflects your personality and brand, but avoid pendants on chains that easily get out of place as you’re moving into different poses.
  4. Don’t Neglect Your Bottom Half
You might decide you want a 3/4 length pose, so be prepared. Remember, darker colors are more slimming.

There is a lot of leeway inside of these guidelines, so have fun, express yourself and your business, and remember, the portrait is about you, not your clothing.
